Hackers use Bluetooth to access cell phones

Nowadays, when you see someone talking on a cell phone, chances are, they're using a wireless device. Bluetooth technology is one of the latest must-have accessories for cell phones. It allows devices like cell phones and PDAs to communicate and transfer information with one another wirelessly. But be careful. Those convenient hands-free earpieces can be susceptible to hackers.

"There are viruses out there that you can get via Bluetooth if you have your phone always on and available to be found," says Darrel Bright at Suncom Wireless.

And that means the data on your phone, like emails, pictures, and addresses, could be seen by hackers. Often they use their phone to try to connect to another's phone through the Bluetooth device.

But you don't need to be too worried about other people listening in on your conversations. Bluetooth devices use a radio frequency that changes one thousand times per second, making it nearly impossible for someone to tap into the frequency of your phone. So what's the best way to make sure your bluetooth is secure?

"Don't make your Bluetooth always active. Only make it active when you need to use it," says Bright.

Experts say that's the best defense for keeping your private information private.
